1997
Cardinal O'Connor established 1997 as "The Year of
Evangelization with Youth", making it a special year
for the FYA. In observance of this special year, the FYA
served as lectors, petitions readers and altar servers in
the second Filipino Apostolate Mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral,
celebrated by Bishop Brucato. The Samahang Filipino of Lehman
College, under the direction of Rommel Milañez, performed
a liturgical dance during the offertory. One of the highlights
of the mass was the rendition of "Tell the World of
His Love", the theme song of the X World Youth Day
in Manila, by the youth and children's choir, under the
direction of Jennifer Mercado.
In August 1997, several members of the FYA attended the
XII World Youth Day in Paris, France. It was a wonderful
opportunity for the young people to meet other young Catholics
from around the world and, of course, to pray and celebrate
the mass with the Pope.
