Catholic Online Saints: St. Lorenzo Ruiz

San Lorenzo Ruiz de Manila

“...because I am a Christian I shall die for God, and had I many thousands of lives I shall offer them for him. And so, do as you like with me."

- San Lorenzo Ruiz de Manila

Prayer to San Lorenzo Ruiz de Manila

Beloved Lorenzo Ruiz, confronted with death, you proclaimed your readiness to die a thousand times for your Christian faith. Today the whole world admires your courage. We your Filipino countrymen and women feel particularly proud of you as our countryman and brother.

And we pray: You, a family man, protect our families. Keep them united in love. You, who bore your sufferings with patience and resignation, intercede for the sick of mind and body and help them to receive the grace of God's miraculous healing.

You, who died in a foreign country, take care of Filipinos living and working abroad. You, an example of Christian fortitude, sustain our faith and make it spread and grow strong all around us.

You, the Philippines' first Saint, be the country's special protector. Make us one people, help us to work in harmony for development and progress, and give us peace. Amen.

Petitions from the Filipino Mass in honor
of San Lorenzo Ruiz

September 26, 1999, St. Patrick's Cathedral

For our holy father, Pope John Paul II, our archbishop, John Cardinal O'Connor, and all the bishops and the clergy. May the Church, under their guidance, enter into the Jubilee filled with joy and hope.

Para sa buong sambayanan ng Diyos. Harinawa ang awa ng Diyos ay maging ating gabay ng buhay na maguudyok sa atin na ipamalas ang ganoon ding awa sa mga taong nangangailangan ng kagalingan. (For the entire church. May the mercy of God be the standard in our lives, inspiring us to show that same mercy to a world in need of healing.)

For the intentions of all who provide support for the pastoral needs of immigrants, especially the 'Tree of Life' Donors of the Philippine Pastoral Center, that their generous example will inspire others to help meet the needs of immigrant Filipino families.

(For the Filipino people, especially those who are immigrants, that we may follow the courageous witness of San Lorenzo Ruiz in preaching the Good News in the midst of oppression.)

For those struggling with addiction, for all who are ill and in pain, for the hungry, the lonely and the abandoned. May they experience God's consolation and our solidarity.

For those who perished in the earthquake in Taiwan, and for all our departed brothers and sisters, marked with sign of faith. May they know the fullness of his mercy and the glory of the resurrected Christ.
